Overwritten Image Files - How Do I Recover?

I accidentally copied over some image files because they had the same image number - I have lost about 300 photos. I am a photographer and take great lengths to not let this happen, but here we are. Can I recover these lost files? I read that Mac doesn’t delete but simply renames and labels the other files as space available again, but until the file space is needed it wont be gone - but I don’t know about WD Passport. Any and all suggestions are helpful!

Additional info, I shoot on CF cards, my two cameras were shooting with the same file count - which I did not know until now - I copied the files to the same folder and before I noticed what happened the Cake Cutting and Toast photos were missing. I have already formatted and shot on all my CF cards, because I had a wedding the next day and didn’t take the time to ensure - that was my biggest mistake.

Thanks!

Were you backing up your files on Time Machine? If so, you may be able to recover versions from there. Otherwise, I’d recommend googling how to recover overwritten files.
