"No Writable WD SmartWare Partition Found"

Gday

I have a total of 4 external WD Hard Drives, 1 x 1TB Elements (in a fireproof safe), 1 x 1TB My Book Elite, 1 x 2TB My Book Elite and the newest edition to my ever growing collection on external drives a 1 x 3TB My Book.

The problem began last night, I noticed  the WD Smartware was flashing.  It has done this before and a reboot usually sorts it out.  Rebooted.   Winblows came back, and the WD Smartware was still flashing.

So I dug deeper, my 1TB My Book wasn’t showing up in my computer.  Tried running the DLG, came back with an error check the cables. I swapped over cables from my 2TB, tried a different  USB port, power cycled the drive.  Still wasn’t showing up.

Unplugged the other two HD’s tried a firmware update, this is where things became odd, the updater said I already had the latest firmware, I reinstalled the firmware anyway.  Success!.  Rebooted, and there is the WD Smartware still flashing at me.

The Smartware said “No Writable WD SmartWare Partition Found”.  Went into Admin Tools, DM, and there is a RAW almost 1TB partition (it has to be the My Book Elite).

I wouldn’t have had a problem in reformating this drive except it was the drive dedicated to my Paragon Backups, Ugg.

Sorry for the story  But there is still more

I unplugged the HD and hooked it up to my friends PC, and lookee there it was recognised.  I had plugged it straight into a USB Port, (on my PC I have all my externals in a USB2 Hub.  Reattached the drive to my PC directly into a USB Port, and blow me down if I am still not getting the error message “No Writable WD SmartWare Partition Found”  So now I am totally bamboozled.

Now to end this long story with a quick fix, In DM I renamed the missing drive and voila the drive is back :flushed:

Nice , but still backup your files just in case.
