No automatic backup?

Hello there,

just bought a WD Essential 1.5TB for my wife, installed Smartware on WinXP SP2, upgraded firmware and software to latest version. Did an initial backup expecting everything to be automatic from then. However, when adding a new file it appears it’s not being backed up autom. and instantly like the user manual suggests.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Have you look into the drive to verify If it is Backing up your files automatically or not?

You can go To the my book >wdsmartware folder > and thru the folders that it has where you can confirm if the files have been backed up properly or no

thanks for your reply Gebthemonster, yes, we of course verified in the drive’s folder structure and we found that new files on the PC are not being autom. and instantly backed up on the drive. Are such changes only periodically backed up or is the auto. backup supposed to back up immediately upon creation/change of a file? That’s at least what the user manual claims.

I AGREE With you , However try to do the Following :

In the Wd Smartware Settings >Setup software , under> System Throttling / Backup Speed it should say : ''PAUSE BACKUP UNTIL COMPUTER IS IDLE ‘’ > if it is Checked then , the Backup is just going to be update as soon as you are not using your computer , however if it is NOT and it is still not Backing up your Files automatically my recommendation is the following :

1 - Uninstall the wd smartware  ( control panel > Programs & features / add or remove programs.

2- Reinstall the wd smartware using the latest version from the WD Website using the link Below :

Hope it Helps

THANKS again Gabthemonster, the SmartWare settings seem correct so I guess I’ll be trying to re-install Smartware as advised. BTW: I’m running on WinXP SP2 and not SP3, could this have any implications? The user manual doesn’t state that SP3 is required, but a technical support analyst in Singapore advised to upgrade the PC to SP3. Thanks for now, will let you know the outcome.

Nice to hear from you once More

Actually having the SP3 or not , in My opinion doesn’t makes a big difference when we are talking about the automatic backup feature , however having the latest Stuff is always the best thing to do , So Yes update to SP3 just to make sure that everything is Up-to-Date

Hope to hear from you soon :)…

Hi Gabthemonster,

re-installing the software as advised by now did the trick!! And yes, SP3 wasn’t really necessary. Thanks a lot for your help!!!

Anytime
