New to Raid - EX4 with Two 4tb Drives Raid 1 - How do I add 2 more drives?

I’ve never used raid before. I started with my EX4 and got 2 4tb drives set up as Raid 1. I’ve searched and haven’t found any conclusive results answering my question.

I’m assuming by inserting 2 more drives, it would follow through with formatting the 2 new drives to match the Raid 1 configuration. If this is correct, will it show up as a new, 2nd drive, or will it it want to format both the two new drives and the two current drives first?

Is there any steps to adding 2 new drives that I need to be aware of, or follow through with?

Hello, welcomde to the community.

If you want to add the 2 new drives to the running RAID 1 the system will need to reformat the drives to add them.

You can have 2 separate RAID one volumes which would show on the dashboard for you to create shares.

Thanks.

So the 2 current drives in the EX4, would be untouched, while the 2 added drives would be reformatted?

I would assume the 2 new added drives could be a Raid 1, and appear as a new volume? e.g. My current set up shows “Public” as my volume, would I then have “Public” and “Public 2”?

Do the newly added drives need to be the same size as my current drives? e.g. I have two 4tb drives, would the new drives need to be 4tb too? Or can they be two 5tb or 6tb drives?

Ideally I would like to have 2 volumes, each which are redundant on a back up.

Thanks for the help!

In order for the current drive that you have not to be touched when creating the second RAID 1, they need to be pulled out of the enclosure. The way I did it was:

  • Open Bays 1 and 2, left the drive in just oppened the bay.

  • Put drives on bay 3 and 4 and created the RAID 1.

  • Turned off EX 4 and closed bay 1 and 2.

  • Turned EX 4 On.

When creating a share you will have a volume option for volume 1 or 2.

The drives can be different sizes as they are not part of the same RAID.

NOTE: even thought this worked for me, this might cause data loss and you need to always have a backup of your data prior of doing something like this.

Thanks.
