New Release - WD TV Live Streaming Media Player Firmware Version 1.16.13 (7/23/13)

Since the update, I can no longer log into my network shares (none, not the ones on my MAC, NAS, Win7 pc’s).

I’ve tried :

  • Reset of router (since the NAS is via the Linksys E4200)

  • Reset of WD player

  • Making sure the drive permissions were ok

  • Password resets on the accounts related to the NAS

I can connect to everything fine from all sources of my network, but the WD Player.

I’ve rolled back the firmware, hoping it would fix it - but to no avail. Literally, my WD player is now rendered absolutely useless. (Most of the Live services don’t work in my country, only YouTube does – and well, that one is just easier on a laptop)

I am hoping it is unrelated to the firmware update, but I have to admit, the issue started when I updated the firmware (last night, hadn’t used the media player in a while, movies played fine - logging in as well, I updated after movie night and that’s it.)

Anyone ANY idea?

Well, if rolling back your firmware didn’t fix it, then it’s not likely a firmware issue.

When you say you can not log onto shares, does that mean you can’t SEE them, or that it refuses to let you connect to them (tells you the password is wrong or something else?)

Since you also did some resets, make sure the workgroup name is still correct.  (The default is WORKGROUP, so if your home network has a different name, you’ll need to change that.)

Workgroup name is the same, I can see the shares, keep getting wrong password/username. While I am 200% certain they are correct.
This is actually the first time it’s gone this wrong :stuck_out_tongue:

ps. I enabled Media server, that way it works - just doesn’t load any subs (external). But it’s a work around. I’ve re-updated to the latest firmware. While I realize that “rollback, issue persists = issue isn’t firmware”, the issue appeared after updating the firmware.

I am going to put this in its own topic

Yes… its true. WD TV rebooths while playing Youtube.

also it does not recognize any usb drives. I tried 5 usb drives .

Total **bleep** product and waster of money.

I just brought this new WD TV live and it does not connetc to Netflix. I mean Netflix screen is stuckup at the splash screen. It shows loading Netflix and nothing starts for 15mins. I mean never starts netflix.

The Youtub restarts the WD player.

I am not able to see any USB drive files. I tried different USB drives with different files and with both the usb slots. Nothing works.

What kind of player is this WD live. Its a dead product.

How to get money back.

The WDTV SMP seems a good device, but user interface is very limited. I bought a WDTV gen3, but a bit disappoinged with its options. I want to access to dropbox and web broswer, because most of my favourate online media is streaming directly from their web sites, not from things alike youtube.

I really wish thoese apps will be included in next firmware release  or give the user some options, that I can install some applications by myself. This OS is a linux variant, it should be capable to do so.

Is the support for this thing even alive at this point???

5 months and counting for Youtube crashing the player.

Support is VERY much alive and well for this product. They actually called me yesterday to figure out an issue I was havving. And the Youtube Leanback **bleep** yes but that’s on Youtube not WD.

I am thinking to return WDTV for a AppleTV too. at least, AppleTV’s remote control responds faster.

I  expected WDTV does better than AppleTV in user UI, because  It runs on linux based OS. Unfortunately, most included apps in WDTV are not useful, I can’t install some of my favourate ones. It’s a junk.

And what gave you this idea? You know you’ll run into trouble with the ATV and MKVs, right?

ATV is a nice device and priced right. You should go over a list of pros and cons for your situation though. The ATV2 is pricey as you have to buy used since it’s the only version that’s jailbroken and worth using atm. The ATV3 does 1080 but is not. The other caveat to ATV is being in the Apple ecosystem. If you’re already a heavy user of itunes and purchase content via Apple then the ATV regardless of version is a good buy. O know there was some sort of unintended way of getting Plex to work on the ATV3 but no idea if it’s patched yet or if it’s not another dlna type of band aid where you push content via your ipad or some other nonsensical way.

WDTV is the best device especially with price in mind if you need a wide range of file and audio support. The UI which can be pretty or prettied up is slow due to being IR controlled among other things. Lack of apps is another once you get beyond certain mainstream ones like netflix pandora spotify hulu youtube. It does support a wide range of apps for general use. The problem with that though is although they support the most heavily used apps  who is to say what’s the top steaming app in a coupl eyears when they don’t update the device anymore.

A question: I would like to have media support for google and amazon cloud to stream music to my wdtv live. Is anything like this planned in future?

Hi, I have these issues

  •  Device restarts when video changes automatically during a Playlist in YOU TUBE

-  DEEZER still not working NO SOUND ( a while ago )

-  Dont see wd tv live in my android cell phone app with this update.

I use only 3 things Netflix, You Tube and Deezer , two NOT RUN, I’ m really disappointed.

I hope in the next update solve these problems.

I own three of the latest generation boxes… my biggest beef is with the MKV file support. Any large file freezes at least once during play back forcing a reboot VIA unplugging the power cable. These are between 11gb and 26gb in size with quality encoding being directly fed to the WDTV player by a Seagate Plus 3TB HDD (STCA3000101).

Probably this bug. What happens when you use the front USB port? It’s definitely not the file size that’s causing this, I play MKVs up to 75 GB (LOTR 3) without any issues.

Thanks for the reply. I actually considered that but changing to the back USB port did not resolve the problem. It’s not always the same spot but generally happens after about an hour of playback. After doing some more research I came across this mediainfo app… does any of this data reveal anything? Thanks

The specs look ok but I see it’s muxed with MKVToolnix 6.1 which IIRC introduced some new settings standalones might not like. What happens when you remux with 5.x? Also, since it’s not always in the same spot, what about your WDTV overheating?

Do you have more info on that? It’s definitely hot to the touch but since I havent read/heard anything about overheating issues I figured it was normal. When I unplug and plug back in to correct the freezes I immediately fast forward to where the file froze and the remaining hour finishes successfully. The unit should be getting sufficient air from its location. I’ll try remuxing a file and see what happens too. Thanks for the suggestion

When I mark a folder from my media library as a favorite, I am not able to access it from the dashboard. Also my favorites in the dashboard are missing the heart symbol, and sometimes I get duplicate folders from my media library which I cannot un-favorite and remove from the dashboard. When I click on one of these favorited folders, the wdtv says “The last content source has been removed. Please select a new content source.”

I am able to reach my folder but have to go through my media library, which defeats the purpose of the favorites and the dashboard. I saw a support article for a similar bug with the 1.15 firmware, but I can’t get it to work with 1.16. Rolling back to 1.13 seems to solve things, but then I find that firmware runs slow on my unit and the GUI often freezes on me.

Anyone have a resolution for my problems? Thanks.

Forgot to mention that my wdtv and computer are both hardwired to the router with static ips. I can access my videos just fine from network shares, media server (using ps3 media server), and even my media library if I navigate from the video menu. My problem only happens when I try and access a favorited my media library folder from the dashboard. Hope that helps.
