Hello, I am planning on buying the PR4100.
I’m not sure how many TB I need yet but I would like to be able to expand in the future.
I wanted to get the diskless version of the PR4100. Then purchase 2 8TB Red drives to start out leaving the other 2 bays empty. RAID 1 or 10 sounded like the safest option to me. Although RAID 10 needs 4 drives right?
So can I start with 2 drives via RAID1 and add more drives later?
My plan is to buy 2 more 8TB drives to expand when I start to run out of space.
Thanks in advance for any advice/help. I am somewhat new to the RAID concept.
Just me. 2 different laptops to backup and Plex.
So computer backups and video files.
I see. Well I originally came across this device because of Plex. So upgrading my Plex server was the initial idea.
I thought if there was space I could use it as an extra backup spot for my laptops.
If that’s not a good idea for RAID then I’ll just keep it for my Plex server. I have backups in place already for my laptops.
Where can I read about adding more drives later? That’s my big concern. 8TB will last me a while. But when the time comes I hope to add space without too much trouble.
Thanks!
I just read your post about JBOD. I actually never heard of that. Like I mentioned earlier, I’m new to this.
I do make good backups of everything. So I’m covered there. I just the PR4100 used RAID only.
Do you think JBOD with proper backups would be a simpler solution for my Plex server? I’m gonna read up on JBOD in the mean time.
I’m definitely learning a lot. Thanks so much.
If you have any other tips on what I should consider as I set up my server. I’d greatly appreciate it and pay it forward.
Thanks!
Did you ever get answers to your questions? I was curious on this as well.
Yes I did but through a friend who has experience with RAID. The answers here were helpful in making my decision but there seems to be contradicting advice.
I set mine up as RAID 1 with Two 8TB drives. The other 2 bays are empty for now.
Plex runs great, my production share runs great and I do manual backups to another share.
In my opinion you should learn what you can on your own, ask around, don’t take the first answer that supports your opinion as bible - someone else will contradict it.
Your needs might not be what mine are or someone else for that matter. Take your time and don’t be impulsive.
I was lucky to get back in touch with my friend that helped me over the phone.
In the end it was my decision based on my needs.
Good luck!
