Hi guys,
I just received a nice email from WD mentioning the new “My Cloud OS 1.5” (whatever that means). What I did saw is there is a new firmware running around.
Basically, I only use the My Cloud (4TB) for:
-
NAS (work, file history, backup, etc)
-
Transmission downloads
-
MiniDLNA (Twonky **bleep** big time)
I really don’t see any point in upgrading the firmware, since I’d have to recompile MiniDLNA and Transmission packages in order to make them work. And I’d also have to deal again with te configuration, disabling all those pesty unnecesary services (such as thumbnails generation). But I may be wrong… Any comments?
If it works ok I wouldnt bother upgrading, as you mention you will need to recompile your packages and there is always a possibility it could go wrong.

I will probably wait a few weeks. Just got the WDMyCloud to replace the MBL from 3 years ago. Things seem to work well with my Apple & Windows computers and I don’t want to spoil that.
If no real scary reports come in I will update.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it… I should have listened to my own advice since I had MyCloud set to autoupdate firmware and I’ve gone from no issues to intermittent ups and downs. Quirky connection issues galore, right now it’s working again. Subject to change without notice…

Give us some details of your issues.
Initially computers on the network could see the MyCloud but couldn’t connect to it. The WD software programs could also see it as well as android and ios apps, but again, no connection… One error message was to upgrade my firmware, which I got a good chuckle out of! I finally was able to map into the drive via Finder on my Mac but thats all the connectivity I got initially. I restarted the MyCloud and had the same problems persisted. Sometimes I can access the dashboard through a browser, other times not. Tried restarting again today and RIGHT NOW it ALL seems to be back to “normal” keeping fingers crossed.

Exactly my point… But usually, is worth asking. Maybe I was missing something important (bug fix regarding storage, performance, power consumption, self-destruction embeded in the code, hehe). I guess there’s nothing new or worth it.
Thank you all for your comments!
YES!!, I just updated my MyCloud from 03.03.01-156 to 04.01.00-408 one at a time using the update from file feature on the Dashboard and my device is, as a trekie would say, operationing within normal paramaters. The WD App works both in and out the house with WiFi being on or off. The device is on the showing up on the Network and file/folder perissions are working as I configured them. All in all another GREAT! product.
For refrence I updated fireware versions one at a time becuase I’ve noticed that things tend to go smoother with WD products if you update in that manner rather than skipping to the latest version at least in my experiance. Hope this helps.
I’m now running 04.00.00-607, and I disabled all the wd* bloatware; aside from 5-6 useless wakeups per day, the device is running smoothly serving media via DLNA and with transmission running. Should I upgrade?
Thanks.

What bloatware are you referring to? The my cloud only comes with Twonky Media Server which I think is the best feature on the device and an itunes media server.
Then you criticize Western Digital when you’ve obviously modded your device by adding transmission thus putting more stress on the device and expect it to run as advertised I will never understand some off you people here. As is out of the box the MyCloud is a great device.
what does the update 1.5 refer to, i cant save files from ipad to mycloud as suggested
@Theagustin Sorry if my comment seemed offensive, not intended.
First, I have no problems with Twonky other than it rebuilding its database on every boot, and I can live with it. It’s a solid DLNA server.
Second, the MyCloud also includes: mycloud stuff (wdphotodbmerger, wdmediaserver, and so on), which never let the drive sleep. That’s the bloatware I’m talking about, because not only it keeps the drive spinning all day long, but it also takes all the CPU, leaving very little free for transference, which translates in horribly slow speeds.
Third: I’m glad yours was such a great device out of the box, that wasn’t my case and I had to put a lot of work and time and knowledge in order to get it working close to stable. And people don’t come to forums to say how great their device is, they come to ask questions and help the ones who ask them. That being said, your comment is totally unhelpful, aggressive, and uncalled for (I didn’t ask if the device was good or not, my question was different).
Finally: You got it wrong: The device never worked better or faster or lighter than as it does now, with the “extra stress” (?) of transmission. Trust me, that stress is nothing compared to the stress the device suffers trying to run the horrible WD software and scripts.
Cheers.
