Hi there. I just bought a WD_BLACK P10 game drive. Using MacBook Pro, I plugged it in for first time, and got an error. Unfortunately, didn’t write down or take screenshot as I thought I would able to replicate the error. Tried replugging the drive, tried rebooting Mac, tried Apple’s Disk Utility but even it cannot see the disk so the utility cannot do a repair, and I do not even get an error. The drive light pulses slowly so I know it’s drawing power. When I first plug it in, I can hear the drive spinning. But then it seems to go to sleep after a while. There’s no way to eject it, because the MacBook Pro doesn’t see it all.
My MacBook Air DOES see the drive, but only with the Disk Utility. I can’t see the WD drive in the Finder window.
On the MacBook Air, I tried a repair (First Aid) and got this notice:
First Aid found corruption that needs to be repaired.
I let it run Disk Repair, and now it says it’s OK. But I still can’t see the WD drive in the Finder.
I tried to see if the MBP would see the drive now, and it still doesn’t in the Finder. It does now see there’s an external drive in the Disk Utility, but doesn’t recognize that it’s a WD drive.
i tried running First Aid on the MBP internal drive, and it checked out OK. I then tried running another repair on the WD drive, but it failed:
Running First Aid on “”
First Aid process has failed
My understanding is that it should have been pre-formatted for both Win & Mac out of the box. Should I try to reformat it using Disk Utility? It’s been years since I’ve needed to reformat a drive and I’m a little nervous. I could try to reformat it but I’m also a little discouraged that the Disk Utility on the MBP didn’t even see it until I ran First Aid on it using the MacBook Air. Should I try to reformat it with some other utility, or is this drive likely to be a lemon? Should I return/exchange it?
Amazon return window closes in a week or two. I’ve emailed support but have no idea if anyone’s answering email during the shelter-in-place order. Hopefully someone is working from home, but who knows? Please help. Thank you!
Be safe!
