I have a new computer since my old one bust. It is critical I assess my backup files. My problem is the same as KaizGMA at Restoring a backup on new PC - #3 by Bowskg… They say they solved their problem but did not say HOW
I uninstall and delete old files from previous attempts, then upload and install the WD Backup. It does allow me to choose to backup, but after I choose Passport as my source the process just ends.
The User Manual was useless
I found another place that said I needed to download four files so I did that, but the WD Backup still did not work.
I’ve had to restore from Passports in the past, due to HDD crashes. I have never used “Restore”. I always just copy from the backup to the new destination. This gives several advantageous:-
You can selectively recover the directories you want
You have complete control of the process.
There is a downside - which is that you may get multiple versions of the same file as it changed through time, but it’s fairly straightforward to clean up.
I hope this helps.
Thanks for responding. But how do you ‘copy’. I have looked at the files and they are labeled un-understandibly. What is the label of the folder you copy from? Or is it just one file on the external drive that becomes multiple files when you copy?
Thanks for responding. I looked for that option, but could not find where exactly my backup files were. None of the folders labeled with ‘personal’ stuff like the ‘name’ I gave my cmpt, had any files looking like my data. And I looked at all the other files/folders too. They seem to have hidden the saved files as thoroughly as they could to prevent copying.
If you open File Explorer, look for the drive you are backing up to, on the left hand panel.
Double click the drive and open the latest backup (it will have a long complicated name, but should includre the date).
Keep double clicking on the folder structure until you find your folders. Then select the files or folders you want to restore and copy them to where you want them.
Yes, I did find the files. Thank you so much. Beats me why I could not find them the other times I looked … I had opened all the folders and subfolders. But now I see them, so all’s good. That is really a load off my mind.
Thanks again.
