New 4TB drive for 4TB DX4000 - stuffed it up?

I failed to notice in the compatibility list that the 4TB WD4000F9YZ does not play nicely with my 4TB DX4000.

So I stuck the drive in - display went “invalid drive” and I got a bit sad :frowning:

Is there any way to make the box work with that drive?

The idea was to just stick another drive in to have more capacity for the non-critical stuff (no raid required).

thanks for any suggestions

Sebastian

No

It only “sees” drives on the list and if it “sees” them, it will RAID them.  You have no control over it

There is absolutely no way to use hard drives other than the ones listed in the WD knowledge base:

http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9443/~/list-of-compatible-hard-drives-for-wd-sentinels-dx4000,-rx4100-,-ds5100,

The thing that is very annoying is that WD manufactured hard drives whch differ from the standard sold ones by the final number of their s/n code. For instance for 4Gb drives

WD4000F9YZ-09N20L1 does not work

WD4000F9YZ-09N20L0 is ok

I guess the differences between the two are simply of firmware recognization to force users to buy hard drives which are almost twice as expansive than WD standard drives. In addition these drives now cannot be found anywhere, for sure for my WD DX4000 they were available in the WD shop since months. I complained with WD shop which answered to ask to the WD support. The WD support told me the WD shop is not owned by WD. The result is that finding replacament or expansion drives for WD DX4000 (as in my case) has been a nightmare

So - yes I did not RTFM.

At least not with the attention I should’ve paid.

Got an external HDD case and hooked it up with  via USB3.

Thanks for the replies.
