I have not tried this, however if the app has an update, you can get a message stating this, lets see if another user can share some information or tips on this matter.
From WD Support:
Updating MySQL is not supported by Western Digital therefore there is no documentation about it from our part, if there was any updates for it it will come in the form of a firmware. This shouldn’t affect any of the other applications.
You are free to investigate online about the possibility of updating but any tampering with the EX4 could void the warranty on the unit.

Why would you want to update MySQL? It is running fine for the NAS database. If there is a bug in 5.1, WD will release a new FW with the new 5.5 update.
