MyBook Thunderbolt 12 TB

Hi,

I don’t get why we don’t already have a MyBook Thunderbolt Duo up to 12 TB.

There are MyBook Duo up to 12 TB, so why is WD late to produce a thunderbolt version?

It would be a very nice addition to the already great Thunderbolt family, that’s still a bit behind it’s PC siblings.

12 TB drives are an absolute necessity in some backup plans, including mine. They allow to use less drives to make a single volume and doing so reduce the system failure probability.

Some other big disks concurrent manufacturer added such a model to its line.

Best regards,

Tom

The device you are looking for is called My Book Pro.

Hi Joerg,

Thank you for the information, as I wasn’t aware of these models.

The thing is My Book Pro 12 Tb is almost twice the price as My Book Duo 12 Tb.

So I still don’t get why WD cannot ship a My Book Duo Thunderbolt 12 Tb; except for charging more a better housing, and USB 3.0 compatibility.

In that case LaCie 2big seems to be a viable cheaper alternative with the same specs.

I’m really found of WD reliability and form factor , but still I’m only looking after a backup drive.

I hope WD will soon fill the gap.

Tom

but at least four times faster

The Pro is equipped with WD Black drives for highest performance, designed for Videographers and everybody having the need of highest performance. Daisy chaining the units speed up the chain beyound a terabyte per second if using an i7 Mac.

I see, that might justify the price gap.

I’m not on this side of the market share. (no video editing) I don’t need performance but convenience there.

Nonetheless My Book Thunderbolt Duo make for a very convenient backup option : fast and cheap enough. There are still quite a lot of Macs running Thunderbolt and USB 2.0… So My Book Duo are not an option.

I’m sorry I did not noticed you were a WD staff member. Do you know if WD has plans to upgrade the Thunderbolt Duo line to 12 Tb in 2016?

I’m a long time user of WD drives (20 years now…) and would like to stick with it. LaCie never advertise their components, the reason why I avoid them. But when you have no choice…

Best regards,

Tom

Hi Joerg,

Any answer to my question ?

“Do you know if WD has plans to upgrade the Thunderbolt Duo line to 12 Tb in 2016?”

Best regards,

Tom

Joerg,

Still no idea?

Best,

Tom

For My Book Duo, we launched the 16 TB version with 2 x 8 TB WD Red drives inside. For Thunderbolt version, I don’t have info. But why not changing to WD Red 8 TB drives by replecing them by yourself?

Hi Joerg,

Thank you for your answer. Would my enclosure be compatbile with the new 8To drives ?

My Book Thunderbolt Duo 8To ref. WUM243900053

Best regards,

Hi Jörg,

funny, that is exactly what I tried. I own a TB Duo with that was originally shipped with 2 Hitachi 4 TB drives and I tried to upgrade it with 2 WD Red drives 8 TB.

At first ist worked fine. But when the drive is inactive for a few minutes it looses the connection and the OS tells me that the drive was ejected incorrectly. I have a feeling it must have something to do with the HDDs powering down, but can’t substantiate that. Any ideas?

Thanks
