MyBook not sleeping - random wake commands even when awake

Hi,

I have a MyBookLive 1TB and have been using it fine for a year without problem. It sleeps till I either manually access it via PC or from sonos (set to not auto update library), or Xbox.

Last weekend I bought a mac, and when installing quick view and mapping the drive, I had to do 3 sequenti firmware updates. Since then the MyBook has been randomly failing to sleep. It will either:

A) wake up randomly, then sleep after 10 mins or so or
B) stay awake and randomly it seems wake from sleep when already awake - along with an audible noise which first made me notice this.

I can’t work out if its the mac or the firmware update. I’ve disabled twonky and anything I can find which might be automatically waking it. It seems fine when the mac is off and only has this problem when the mac is on, but since it appears in finder I’m wondering if this is the prob (although it won’t always sleep when the mac is even in standby).

Can anyone suggest anything please? I had a look through the logs but can’t see anything other than lots of wake from sleep notes - but nothing saying it goes to sleep, so I think it’s the constant wake from sleep that’s the problem.

I phoned support yesterday and the guy said this is normal. Clearly not as it wasn’t doing this for a year before I made the firmware and hom computer changes.

Any help really appreciated please, thankyou.

An upadre on this, tried disconnecting the mac and going back to pc - still doing it. Tried disconnecting my sonos - still doing it, and then disconnectin the pc as well - still randomly waking.

My only conclusion is that its one of the last 3 firmware updates. knows anyone know if its possible to roll back firmware updates or if there an alternative nas they can recommend, perhaps flash or ssd that won’t burn out qui quick as a traditional hdd one that keeps firing up on its own frequently.

Hi, there is no option to do a roll back, but you can try pressing the reset button on the back for 4 seconds, if that doesn’t work then you can also try doing a factory restore after doing a backup.

Hmm not great news that. Not really sure what else to do about this, I’m worried that if it’s constantly on it’s going to burn out.

Same for me.

since I brought a Mybook Live Duo it keeps waking up, staying on for some minutes, going to sleep, waking up for all night and day.

the firmware is the latest. What to do? Switch off the AC?

Has to be firmware. There loads of firmware files on the website, will try find the link - am going to try a manual update on an older one.

I have exactly the same problem. Did you find a solution?

In fact I restored my drive, nothing is on it and it happening to sleeping for longer than 10minutes. If I unmount the drive it seems to sleep problem but that defeats the point times timemachine backup?!

No solution. Have been testing different scenarios - it does it even with nothing else running, it’s ridiculous.

WD tech support just said exchange it. Laughable.

Judging by the amount of view to the thread, we can’t be the only ones! Now is the time I wish I hadn’t bought it through an online retailer as its going to be a pain to exchange…

I’m not goings to bother exchanging it. Loads of posts about the issue getting worse with every firmware, can’t be bothered to copy all the data off it and exchange only to have the same problem.

Bad show Western Digital. “This is totally normal” despite it not being totally normal is a poor response.

Hi MattKB

I’ve uninstalled Quickview from my mac and it has helped it sleep longer - maybe 40 mins at most although still not sleeping as long as it should be. With my setup it sleeps fine when unmonted from my Mac which kind of suggests that something on the mac is keeping it awake but I have no clue what.

Also unimpressed with WD, I’ve filed several support requests and no one has replied.

FYI - my mac is sleeping like a baby. I upgraded mountain lion today. Some patch in osx 10.8.2 and now all is well. Seems like I was a bit harsh to blame wd after all and a bit breed less to restore! Hope its the same fix for you.

im about to turn on mobile access, hopefully all will be we’ll.

Hasn’t sorted it for me. And what’s worse, when the drive wakes up, it wakes up my mac!
