MyBook live 1TB and a blank HD inside

Hello everyone, this is my first post.

I’ve searched the forum for an answer, but i found no similar issues.

First of all I have to say that my situation is really out of every official support.

This is what happened:

I had to recover a PC with failing HD as soon as possible. So i went to nearest shop to buy an HD, they didn’t sell bare plain HDs, and i bought a WD MyBook Live. Then  I opened it to get the HD to replace the failing one.

I tried to open the MyBook case as carefully as possible to save both the case and the electronics for later use.

I had to format the 1TB HD taken from the MyBook, with no possibility to clone it somwhere else. I saw 4 or 5 Linux partitions: I guess the smaller ones for an operating system installed, and a large partition for data storage.

Now I’m trying to set back up the MyBook with another HD inside.

As expected, the MyBook stops with a yellow light trying to load the Operating System.

My question is:

is it possible to download some “factory Operating System” iso image from the WD web site, tranfser it onto the blank HD (2TB instead of 1) I put inside the case, and have the MyBook do the work it was originally ment for?

For the case only has ehternet, I was wandering that maybe I can put the HD into a USB case and use " dd" command from a Linux machine to copy the OS image on the HD.

Maybe the problem is the 2TB? Does the case only support 1TB?

Thanks

I am also interested in this and I would like to know what can we do if we use a blank HDD to make it function with MBL. The Linux distro used is Debian but have no idea which version and how to be installed. Any feedback is appreciated.

I’ve try  to clone the HD to new one with same WD 1T using Ghost and HDclone, the results  are failed, it can’t be found by WD setup program :frowning:

I’ve found something useful.

From a page dealing with the MyBook Live:

I found a link to a page regarding MyBook World:

http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/forum/t-317579/complitly-debricking-…1

If you carefully follow the tutorial (especially the 16-step part added by the user munozdj) it works.

I’m not sure if it works at 100% on the MyBook Live. But 'ive been able to have the MyBook load the Operating System, set up a share and many other things. All starting from a blank HD.

PS

I know this not official support, but after a few days searching the web it was the only tutorial i found.

I like WD products, and I would appreciate tutorials like this made by them, which i wasn’t able to find on the official website.

I hope I don’t get banned for this
