My Passport Ultra unrecognized, and yet

A friend wanted me to put some files onto her My Passport Ultra. But I couldn’t, nothing would copy over from my iMac. I realized that although all the files were Mac-based, the drive wasn’t formatted for one. I conferred with her and she told me that her brother had backed-up what was on her loaned MacBook Pro, and that he was on a PC. I told her that the solution would be for me to backup everything on the Ultra onto an external hard drive of mine, I could re-format the Ultra and then copy the backed-up files onto it. Then I’d be able to put my files onto her drive.

I began copying the files over to my hard drive, but my system decided to be uncooperative and I had to do a cold-start. When I rebooted my iMac…the Ultra didn’t show up. Either in Finder, or Disk Utility on either my iMac or my MBP. What’s weird is that the WD Unlocker aspect on the Ultra does show up.

I’ve rebooted both machines. I’ve used a different USB cable. And still the drive does not show up. (But the Unlocker does.)

Any thoughts?

Hi schmadrian,

Maybe you should try contacting WD’s Technical Support about this.

Thanks. But it turns out that Me=Doofus.
When I’d first connected the HD to my iMac, both it and the Unlocker element showed up.
After I’d rebooted, the HD did not. Hence my post here.
After trying all kinds of things, I double-clicked on Unlocker, it allowed me to enter the password…and lo and behold, the HD.
