I have a new My Passport - it is formatted for Windows. In the past I was always able to use Disk Utility to erase and rename in OS journaled or ExFAT. I just updated to Sierra and this is not working. Western Digital has already offered to replace it, but the problem is I can not even erase and rename a USB thumb drive. So I assume the new drive WD sends will also have this problem.

If you are having issues erasing a USB thumb drive then it is clearly a computer issue and not a drive issue.
Thanks so much. I did figure it out yesterday - part of it anyway. I used First Aid to repair “errors” on my mac, and that found and cleared something up and I was able to rename the USB. Still unable to re-format the My Passport so it is going back. It has issues.
