Hi there, I ran a WD Drive Utilities on this drive and both SMART status and Quick Drive Test Passed. The drive shows up on the Apple’s Disk Utility app as well. The drive continues to not show up on my machine now? Any suggestions?
thanks
One clarification. When I run apples disk utility the drive looks to be 100% filled with no free space. An odd thing is the drive shows up, but underneath the same drive is a lighter shade and unable to run disk utility on this.
Can you verify the file format of the drive? If it’s exFat, does your Mac support exFat?

Is your hard drive listed in Disk Utility pane as greyed out?
Did you notice any unusual sound from your hard drive?
Im pretty sure It is not ExFat. Under disk utility it does say Mac journaled but no other format mentioned. This drive was also plugged into my WD Cloud for additional storage and was accessible a few days ago.
My WD cloud is now also inaccessible. Not sure what has all of a sudden happened.
Yes the drive is grayed out under disk utility. I did not notice clicking sounds. I also tried to mount the drive via terminal and was unsuccessful.
In my opinion, your hard drive has corrupt file system or some other logical error. You mentioned it had passed SMART and other tests. You know if you format this drive it should get back to life. The only problem is that you will loose all the contained data. As per the below link, file recovery is possible on your external hard drive. This is exactly what is happening to me, I’ve tried everything and nothing works! I really don’t want to lose my pictures Have you found a solution yet?
I”m currently scanning the drive with the Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery Software. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
I’ll let everyone know how this turns out.
Did you solve it with the Stellar Recovery Software? I put mine to scan too but it has taken all day! & When I called a company that WD recommended they said it would cost $700 to recover my things!!
My disk has been scanning for almost 24hrs now. I’m not giving up just yet. I’m going to let it run some more today. Yep to recover HDs run about this much. It’s depressing
I’m so depressed too! I’ve been in 14 countries in like 90% of my pictures are in there! I have to recover them! Anything yet? You have to pay after the scan don’t you?
I went ahead and bought the program. It’s still scanning…ugh
ah let me know if the program works ! did you pay $99 or $125? Do you know what’s the difference?
I bought the 99 version. I became impatient and stopped the scanning. I started a RAW scan and stopped that as well. I was able to recover the items that the RAW scan identified but they are not in folders or any sort of hierarchy.
I started a new scan and will let it run its course for however long it takes.
Is there any freeware option?
My mom ripped out my WD 2TB My Passport drive from her machine and now it’s not mounting on either of our Macs.
Shows up in System Information as well as diskutil list on Terminal.
HELP!!!
TestDisk is a freeware data recovery tool. It runs on command lines. I don’t think so there is exist even a tutorial of this video that can help you recover files from an unmounted drive. Good Luck.
