My cloud old version not usable anymore

Hey guys, I have a WD My Cloud device and i used it happily until 2022 when it was suddenly not supported anymore and needed a firmware upgrade it could not have on this older model. it is still in fine working condition just i cant do anything with it anymore. now i want to get my data off the device and decommission it but i cant get to the data because it does not connect to internet anymore. I am really annoyed because all my pictures are on here
. please help.

Why isn’t your old My Cloud usable anymore? Have you connected it to your local network router, just like before? The My Cloud will STILL work when connected to the local network just like it did before for local network access. The main thing that changed was WD terminating remote access support through their My Cloud web portal for the older OS3 supported My Cloud devices. One can setup their own methods of remote access to their My Cloud device (for example setting up a VPN server on the same local network).

Q: Will my device stop working if I can’t upgrade to My Cloud OS 5? Will I lose access to my data?
A: After the services are shut down, you can only access the device on a local network. Access through the My Cloud OS 3 mobile app or web app won’t work. Email notifications won’t be delivered. Devices that had auto-update enabled received a final firmware update that disabled remote access and outbound traffic to cloud services. Now, support has ended and you have to use your local network to access your device.

If you have a Windows PC, note that Microsoft made some changes that might prevent easy access by device name to the My Cloud device both in new Windows installs and through Windows Update Patches. One can still access the My Cloud by it’s IP address. Make sure to enable SMBv1.0 support within Windows and see the following for some additional changes you may have to make in Windows:

One may have to perform a pin reset (either 4 second or 40 second) if they have forgotten their My Cloud administration password or previously configured a static IP address for their device in the My Cloud Settings. Various relevant WD Support documents:

Hey @maartenjan,I totally get why you’re pissed off about this WD My Cloud mess - it’s absolutely ridiculous when a perfectly good device gets killed off by some corporate decision to drop support, and now all your pictures are basically held hostage. But here’s the deal - your data’s still sitting right there on that drive, you just gotta get creative about accessing it. First thing I’d try is hooking it up directly to your router with an ethernet cable and see if you can hit it locally through your browser or just map it as a network drive.
