I frequently use the web interface of https://home.mycloud.com/ and appreciate its functionality. However, I believe it could be significantly improved by incorporating additional features. Specifically, I would suggest the following enhancements:
Filtering capabilities: Options to filter by file type, folder-only views, only first-level folders, specific file extensions, or file names starting with a particular string.
Sorting options: Ability to sort by more parameters, e.g. date created, etc.
Pagination control: The addition of pagination functionality and a dropdown menu to allow users to select the number of results displayed per page.
Could you kindly advise on whom I should approach with these suggestions? Additionally, I am curious if it is feasible for an individual to implement such features independently by learning relevant programming skills. Any guidance on where to start would be greatly appreciated.
It is probably a little late in the cycle to think about enhancements to the MCH functionality because it has been more than 7 years since its introduction and Western Digital usually enforce End of Life (EOL) treatment in years 8 through 10, sometimes earlier as in the case of ibi Photomanager which shared the same firmware as My Cloud Home and the ibi is now EOL.
If you had joined the forum back in 2021, you should know by now that
MCH had something called WD Discovery for Desktop for doing just what you suggested, but that software was deprecated mostly due to bandwidth abuse and the high frequency of desktop OS changes that broke WDD functionality.
Since 2023, WD now advised users to use ‘Enable Local Access’ and desktop file managers to do what your enhancements proposed.
I wasn’t aware of the WD Discovery for Desktop software and the issues that led to its deprecation—makes sense now why it’s no longer supported. I’ll definitely look into enabling local network access as you suggested to see if it meets my needs.
I appreciate you sharing some background on the lifecycle of My Cloud Home (MCH). While I understand that it’s in the later stages, I’m still hopeful to make the best use of it for as long as possible. It’s good to know the options available for accessing and managing files locally, and I’ll explore this path further.
Thanks again for the insights—it’s been really helpful!
