My Cloud 4 TB Keeps Disconecting while transfers

I just picked up a MY Cloud Mirror 4TB.  It was working fine untill I added a 4TB MY Book external to the USB.

It will disconnect when transfering large amounts of data.

I start the transfer and it will work for hours then all of the sudden stop and windows cannot find the drive.

If I try to access the drive from any other comptuer or the web interface I get nothing. All I can do is unplug the unit from power then plug it back in to work.

Any ideas how to fix this? It would be nice to transfer my 500GB of data to my NAS.

Hello and welcome to the WD community.

Try to reset the device and see if the same issue happens again, also make sure you have the latest firmware on the device installed. Here is a link that ,oght help you witht he reset process:

Does this happen if you use a different drive plugged to the unit?

Firmware is updated. And I have tried this 8 times over the last 2 weeks. Same result every time.

My Cloud Mirror 6TB was working fine, however since updating to Firmware Release 1.05.36 the unit also exhibits a similar issue of the MCM disconnecting while transfers in addition to other slow performance issues. (1) I had no issues previously and have had no other hardware or network changes. The only change was to the firmware (2) Now Windows Explorer takes a while to ‘index’ and open up the MCM folders (3) Now whilst transfering files from a Windows PC (2 different PCs) to any MCM folder, the system stops partially though the operation (only 400-500 Mb of data) after 1 minute or so, Windows Explorer is ‘unresponsive’ and then eventually returns the message that the network drive is unavailable. The drive has to be unmapped and re-mapped but htis only takes it back to the above step (2) (4) I have tried both DHCP and also a static IP, but there is no difference between the two. (5) Also accessing the My Cloud Mirror via the web interface \mycloudmirror or 192.168.1.101, etc is very slow whether via WiFi or via a Lan connection.

@SniperStorm - how are you doing the transfer? Drag/drop or copy/paste from a computer (Windows Explorer or equivalent) or using the Web File Viewer app in the MCM dashboard.

If the former, then you are not really transferring the data from the MyBook to the MCM, but from the MyBook to the computer and then back to the MCM. I would suspect that all the network traffic both ways is overloading the link to the computer (especially if it’s on wifi rather than ethernet) and perhaps causing your issue.

My recommendation would be to use the Web File Viewer app in the dashboard to move or copy the files instead. That way you are directly moving from the MyBook to the MCM without any other detours. Once you start things off you will probably find that your connection to the dashboard will time out after a while (10 minutes by default, but you can extend it a bit in the dashboard settings) but don’t worry about it, the transfer will carry on. It will take some time (I’d leave it going overnight for example), but it’s the quickest way to do such a transfer.

The other way (if you’re confident with linux) is to SSH into the MCM and do the copy via command line (you should find the USB drive mounted under the /mnt folder), but be a bit careful with that as using SSH can potentially have warranty issues.

In the web interface, I also note that the Device Name, Description and Serial Number fields are all blank. The MCM was switched off again After the last MCM power down/power cycle, the web interface is noticed to be at a responsive speed again and the Device Name, Description and Serial Number fields are correctly populated Windows Explorer could easily be mapped and was responsive to accessing MCM folders. Transfer of 20Gb data from PC to MCM via LAN completed successfully So, the problems appeared, it has now strangely disappeared now.

I had the same problem before when using TP-Link TL-MR3020 (a tiny portable travel router) to transfer files from my notebook to MyCloud Mirror through WiFi connection. The transfer would suddenly stopped after a few while and I couldn’t access the web interface. I had to reset my router above to remedy the problem. Now that I’ve replaced the router with a more beefier TD-W8961ND all works fine without a hitch. So you might want to check your router whether it is up to the task.

Also as  DarrenHill suggested it is recommended to use Web File Viewer app or SSH when transferring date to /from your connected USB drive to avoid detouring to the router first. The WD MyCloud Desktop app can also bypass the router.
