My Book suddenly won't work?

I have had a my book for over a year and it has always worked fine on all our household computers. Now, all of a sudden, it won’t work on any of them. When I plug it in, instead of saying “My Book” it says “Local Disc” and whichever port it is in. When I click that it says “not accessible, the file or directory is corrupt or unreadable.” It is the same on all the computers we have. I have tried unplugging it, and tried to download the firmware update, but that program wouldn’t run either. Ideas?

Cause and effect. Your hard drive is corrupted or damaged.

Try formatting your hard drive, which should repair the file system (Bear in mind this will destroy stored data).

If your unit refuses to be formatted or the same issue repeats itself I’d recommend replacing the unit.
