My Book Studio 3TB Firewire Drive for Mac Is Extremely Slow

I recently moved my ‘My Book Studio 3TB Firewire Drive’ and Mac Mini across town. Both were well packed for the move. Shortly after plugging the computer and drive in at the new location, TimeMachine reported problems with the drive. Disk Utility couldn’t verify the disk and suggested erasing and reformatting. I erased and partitioned into 2 volumes. Now the drive is unusable. It is very slow to mount and after mounting, it is very slow. When I try to copy files to it, it hangs ‘preparing to copy’ for long periods of time (5+ minutes) I tried running verify on one of the volumes in Disk Utility but it estimated that it would take over a day to complete. Any ideas?

Hi there,

Try to check if the USB connection is also slow, also if possible try to get a fire wire to test if using a different cable can help.

Hi, I tried with the USB cable, still slow. It still hangs before starting to write, and then it writes at about a 1/MB a minute. Also tried connecting to my macbook pro, same problem. So I’ve ruled out the cables (firewire/usb) and the device its connecting to (mini/laptop). Both computers are running Yosemite.

Finally got around to removing the drive from the My Book Studio enclosure.

I put the drive in another usb3 enclosure (Vantec NextStar) then erased and reformatted. The drive is still extremely slow (1 MBs reading and writing). So I have ruled out the My Book Studio controller as the source of the problem, it looks like the drive is bad. I’m curious whether it can be fixed given that it mounts and spins. The drive is a WD Green 3.0 TB SATA 64MB cache WD30EZRX - 00DC0B0.

Does anybody know whether this is a common problem and whether there is a simple fix?
