My Book backup statistics not increasing

I have a 3 TB, 8 year old WD MyBook which I use to do monthly backups of my Windows 10 PC. The external WD drive is otherwise OFF. What I don’t understand is why my Backup stats don’t increase during backups even though the top of the screen massage says: ‘copying files’. I now have 53,548 files and a Size of 195.78 GB on my MyBook. During the last several monthly backups, these numbers have not increased when I keep adding files to my PC’s hard disk. I’m using WD Smartware Pro ver. 2.4.16 for my backups. There are no error messages and the data transfer wire is properly connected at both ends. What could be going on?
