I have had a wdmycloud for all of 2 days. I have uploaded 500GB of data (over my 100mbps network which took ages) to the public folder by accident, instead of the private share I had set up. how do I move files without them actually copying to my local machine and then back up to the destination folder? I cannot find a way to organise the files and if I FTP in, move is not supported. Using windows networking I am only given the choice to copy, same if I use the WDmycloud app on PC/IOS/Android…all of which I have tried.
Please can somebody point out the obvious mistake I must be making?
Many thanks one and all.
fizzychicken,
How did you move the files to the drive? manually or with a backup software?
If it was manually, you can open the drive in windows explorer cut the files from the public folder and copy that to the private folder that you want.
You’re not making a mistake. That’s how NAS works.
If you move a file from one share to another, it MUST traverse the network to the PC and back.
The only way I know of to do it quicker is the shell into the Cloud via SSH and use the shell’s MOVE commands.
But be wary of permissions & file ownership, because crossing share boundaries can mess it up pretty quickly unless you know what you’re doing.
You REALLY ought to upgrade your network to Gig Ethernet. ;)
