Maximum storage period for WD Red Serie?

Hello,

what is the maximum storage period for the WD Red Serie, especially the 8 TB hard disk, WD80EFZX ?

Yesterday I bought one of the drives and the production date states “13 DEC 2016”.
Should I return this product to the shop or can I use it without being worried ?

Looking at the Product Specification of the WD80EFZX, shows it has a 3 Year Warranty.
So, to answer your question “what is the maximum storage period”, you can expect a minimum of 3 years from the Manufacture Date. By the way, this can be checked on the Warranty Status Web Page.
I doubt there is a “maximum storage period” documented as WD would only guarantee minimums.

However, with respect to your question “Should I return this product…”, then it becomes a question of ‘are you happy to have lost the warranty between Dec 2016, and now?’ Personally, I’d be asking for a replacement with a Manufacture date a little closer to current, or some reduction in price.

Hope that’s useful.
Regards

Warranty is valid from the purchase date (if he can document it with a receipt) and NOT the manufacturing date and as such there is no reason not to use that drive.

No, the problem is the following (I just found this information for Seagate, but there must be something for WD as well):

Maximum storage periods are 180 days within original unopened Seagate shipping package or 60 days unpackaged
within the defined non-operating limits (refer to environmental section in this manual). Storage can be extended to 1 year
packaged or unpackaged under optimal environmental conditions (25°C, <40% relative humidity non-condensing, and
non-corrosive environment).

I have read something similar about WD, but can’t remember the website I found it… I just remember that helium-drives can be stored a little bit LONGER than normal drives, something what surprised me)
