Updated to the latest firmware - when I play any instant watch, it just shows up as snow, flickering. No picture at all. I have a Philips TV. I did a ‘reset to factory defaults’ and re-activate Netflix. I saw in the firmware release notes there were some HDMI fixes. Perhaps I’m missing something - any ideas?
Yes, it could be an HDMI handshake issue. NetFlix has their OWN HDMI Handshake, above and beyond what the WDTV does. It’s part of NetFlix’s API that they provide WD.
That is such a lame answer. The problem is NOT my TV. I can view everything on this TV, including Netflix through a Roku and video from Xbox streaming, a Philips DVD, a Sony Blu-ray with BDLive. Everything displays beautifully, even the video from other sources on the WDTV. Only the Netflix on this WDTV Live Plus HD is messed up. It flickers, looks like a scratchy 8mm video source. So far I’m not impressed at all.
Are you saying that Netflix did work with your TV in older firmware?
The ‘snow’ issue described in the knowledge base article is indeed caused by TVs not following the HDCP specification properly. The HDMI handshaking circuitry in the chip used in the WDTV Live Plus isn’t capable of working around certain flaws in the HDCP implementations of some TVs. Chips used in other players may or may not be capable of working around these issues, which might be why your other devices don’t exhibit this problem.
[Deleted]. After using the WDTV a little more, the blinking and snow is evident on EVERY video viewed, even ones on an external drive. After having a BDLive Blu-Ray, an Xbox 360 (both of which can stream Netflix), and other devices properly display a beautiful picture without any blinking or snow on one of the 3 HDMI connections I have on my TV, to say that the TV is defective because this WDTV can’t display properly is simply ludicrous. This WDTV I have is obviously defective, I’m sending it back to Newegg for an exchange. I hope the new one works well, otherwise I’ll just look for some other device. It isn’t like WD is the only game in town, it was just on sale. BTW, my internet bandwidth isn’t an issue, either. On my PC connected to the same router (I used a hardwire connection for the WDTV, not wireless), I get a consistent 12Mbps downstream/2Mbps upstream (tested using a large file transfer, not those burst tests). Ping times to Netflix are in the 45ms area.
The HDMI cable works beautifully for the Xbox, the Sony Blu-ray, the Roku… if the WDTV is that picky about the cable and the tv it is connected to, then maybe a redesign should be considered.
