Lack of usb wireless support driving me insane

So I’m getting a little miffed. I got a new wd live plus yesterday, and I want it to work in the 5ghz range with my router. Apparently there are like only 2 usb adapters that are 5ghz on the approved list, and of those only revision 1 firmware works with the router. It’s impossible for me to determine what Amazon will ship me or what I can pick up from best buy. I even just ordered the trendnet TEW-664UB, and after searching their website I had no issue to believe there was anything other than version 1.0R… OH but guess what, Amazon.com shipped me a 1.1.R, and while it sees the wireless networks, nothing will make it get an IP from any network, locked down or not. This is very frustrating. I want to be able to use the max speed and capabilities of my e3000 router, but can’t get proper wireless support from you all. Why didn’t you just bundle a dual-band wireless card in the live? Why don’t you give us ssh access to the box? I’ve been a linux admin for 13 years and can compile the darn modules myself if I have to.

Here are the ONLY 5ghz supported usb wireless adapters on the list:

WUSB600N V1

TEW-664UB V1.0R

WL-329 V1 001

Good luck finding those new somewhere… sigh

wdlxtv firmware can give you ssh access.  http://forum.wdlxtv.com/

I own a WUSB600N v2 which also works.

More info on working adapters…

Will that work safely on the latest WD TV Live PLUS?

Soon…

Thanks… I’m compiling the GPL from source now and will see if I can add the linux module in by hand…

I dont know why WD just doesnt compile in all the top usb devices from the major vendors (d-link, linksys/cisco, trendnet, netgear, belkin)

WD recently expanded the list of adapters officially supported by the Live and Live Plus.

I would be very careful with that new list, I just bought the DWA-160 and it doesn’t work on the Live Plus.

A WD tech should be talking to me later around 1-2, so I’ll find out more on that later.

IMO WD shouldn’t be listing any model card that isn’t fully supported no matter any rev changes, it’s shouldn’t be the customer responsibility to have to jump hoops to find a working USB card.
