Kitfox doesn't recognize my WD Black hdd's

I have two WD hdd’s mounted internally in my system, but Kitfox doesn’t recognize either of them. They are:
8TB WD Black WD8002FZWX
10TB WD Black WD102FZBX

However they are recognized by Win 10 and they function normally. I’ve been using the 8TB drive for two years. The 10TB drive is new, but has been in use for a week with no problems. Both are recognized by CrystalDiskInfo, GSmartControl, Seatools, Samsung Magician, and Intel Memory&Storage Tool. The one exception is Crucial’s Storage Executive, which only detects the 8tb hdd, not the 10tb.

Even though Kitfox doesn’t detect my two Western Digital hdd’s, it does detect one of my six sdd’s, an Intel. Ironically it doesn’t recognize any of my three WD Black ssd’s. I know it’s not supposed to recognize ssd’s, but why does it find the Intel?

I’ve been trusting Western Digital drives for decades. Dashboard worked fine for years, but Kitfox is making me seriously question my trust in WD. Why is it so seriously misfiring on my system?

Kitfox may not recognize WD Black HDDs due to driver or firmware issues. Check BIOS settings, ensure proper power/data cables, and update Kitfox or try a different SATA port.

So you have 11 drives in it? Kitfox detects my Samsung SSD but I can’t do anything with/to it.

Here’s a link to the support page.

See the “Drive not detected” section.

How is the SATA controller configured in BIOS?

Forgot to add. I have an old WD Scorpio Black laptop drive (WD7500BKPT). I connected it with a USB adapter. Kitfox found it and I was able to view the drive.

Dashboard worked. Kitfox doesn’t. Switching from Dashboard to Kitfox is the only change. My other disk utilities find all my drives without a problem. It’s only Kitfox that can’t find my WD drives.

Since you asked, I have nine drives:
Samsung 870 EVO 1tb - Win 10
Samsung 860 EVO 500gb Linux (OpenSUSE)
Intel 120gb Linux (Fedora)
WDC WD8002FZWX 8tb
WDC WD102FZBX 10tb
Crucial CT480BX 500gb
usb nvme WD_BLACK SN850X 2tb
usb nvme WD_BLACK SN850X 2tb
usb nvme Crucial CT2000T500SSD8 2tb

It’s a smooth running system. All the drives are accessible and in daily use in Win 10, OpenSUSE, and Fedora. The only problem is Kitfox. And yes, I’ve confirmed that the Kitfox service is running. Before Dashboard was deprecated, it was functioning without a problem.

If Kitfox doesn’t recognize your WD Black HDDs, try updating drivers and checking disk format. Unlike this issue, Youcinema runs smoothly without hardware detection problems, offering seamless streaming on most devices.

Well, if you tried everything from the link above, you should open an incident with WD Support.

Hey @erik_b I totally get why this is frustrating. If your drives are working fine and showing up in other tools, then it’s likely Kitfox itself just isn’t fully compatible with those WD Black HDDs. You’re not the only one seeing this—others have run into similar issues since switching from Dashboard.

Since you’ve already made sure the Kitfox service is running, I’d say go ahead and raise a ticket with WD Support. Sometimes they’ve got internal fixes or updates that aren’t out publicly yet.

Also, just as a quick check—try running Kitfox as admin or disabling any security software temporarily, in case something’s blocking it from detecting the drives properly.

Until WD sorts this out, sticking with CrystalDiskInfo or other tools is probably your best bet.

@EstherEdward, excellent suggestions. I’d allowed my disgust with Kitfox to keep me from thinking of it. Unfortunately, neither running Kitfox as administrator nor pausing antivirus changed anything.

It’s doubly infuriating that while Kitfox doesn’t find my 8tb and 10tb WD Black hdd’s, it does find one of my ssd’s, an Intel, even though it doesn’t find my WD Black ssd’s. Kitfox is apparently just a really screwed up product. I’ve been a strong believer in WD products for a long time - I’ve been building my computers since 1993 - and never expected WD might come out with such an untested product. It’s a major disappointment.

我的也是Kitfox找不到硬盘,但在另一台上就能找到,怎么搞都搞不好,

I use Seatools which recognizes everything. I use it to clean disks and check health etc. Works with all makes and models of disks and SSD alike.
