So i have this Western Digital Gold 3.5’’ 4TB WD4004FRYZ that is bran new. I didn’t much with it, just a transfer to test it and it does this sound you hear in the video. The very long “krkrkrkrkrkr” sound is like really loud and it feels like it’s just scratching my disk. Am i wrong ? (YT link down below to hear the sound)
Did you format the drive before using it?
Format Definition - What are the meanings of “format?”
I’ve never heard that sound on any hard drive (HDD).
Where did you purchase the drive?
The sounds I hear are the heads moving back and forth which is standard for hard disks. I suggest putting the disk into a USB enclosure so that no damage will come from operating the disk dangling from a USB SATA cable. USB enclosures are not expensive.
Yes, I had to format it, because at first my computer didn’t recognize it. When it finished formating it, I did a transfer as a test and that’s when I started noticing these strange noises. I can’t remember if they were already there during the formatting phase, because at first, I didn’t pay attention. I bought it on the WD digital website
Formatting disks should not take long with a WD4004FRYZ as this disk is using 4096 byte sectors. Windows 11 sets up disks quick.
Seatools can check the SMART status which should be checked occasionally to be sure the disk health is good.
Seatools can also zero wipe a disk that needs to be cleaned up. Disks can often be resurrected with a zero wipe. I have even done that with giant capacity hard disks which have racked up over 30,000 operating hours in use.
this sound denotes hard drive failure.
as the normal drive sounds softly.
what you can do is- switch it off, the more you use, the more damage it will create.
secondly, this hard drive if is still in warranty then ask for replacement.
