How to download large files... help!

Hi
I (now regrettably) decided last year I would like to get a NAS system set up so my family can all use their computers and iPads/iPhones and have access to the stuff we all share - music, photos mainly.
So I uploaded our iTunes and iPhoto libraries to our mycloud gen2 device and we’ve been uploading ever since

Fast forward to today and it’s all been working okay (very slow to connect and laggy to view pictures - but I blame my WiFi set up for that) thus far. However I have now purchased a new computer and decided with the large HD space I know have I would like to keep a back-up of the photo’s on the iMac itself since I now have 1TB of them going back 15+ years…

The issue is, iPhoto keeps everything in one library file and every time I try and copy it across from mycloud mapped drive to my iMac it crashes. The largest I’ve got to is 150gb before it crashed. Each time I need to relaunch finder to start it again and it goes so ■■■■ slowly! Is there an easy/fast way to deal with such a large single file?! After three days of trying (including connecting my iMac to the Ethernet) I am worried my photo’s are stuck on this drive for good… pls help!
