High Sierra 10.13.4 Corrupted Drive?

I have a My Passport for Mac 4TB drive that has worked flawlessly until the latest MacOS update to 10.13.4. I rant the update yesterday and when my MacBook Pro started up it told me that the disk “could not be repaired” and that I am able to read the data to back it up, but that I cannot save or modify data on the disk. I was then advised to back up the data (which will take forever) and to reformat the drive. What gives? Is this the update that did this? This drive has worked perfectly until now. It has all of my vital data on it. Why would this happen other than something wonky with 10.13.4?

BTW, the drive shows up everywhere, including Finder and Disk Utility. Repair does not work in Disk Utility. I am flumoxed.
