I have used Western Digital hard drive since 1985 putting them into computers that I built in my computer shop and before that I used them in the computers I worked on in the navy. I have found them to be a solid investment, all hard drives have some problems but the number game is always been with WD hard drives. however, the new Green drive is a serious problem. I have read the write up and they were all bad, I just could not get my head around it since all the other WD drives have been golden for me. so like any normal person I purchased 2 1-tb green drives for my new office computer, I purchased them on Monday, loaded them up that night, and two days later they failed. both of them. (Thank those in the know to make back ups) anyway, my question is, What is it with the Green drive? is everyone having trouble with them? if so why is WD still releasing them?
I would like to ask you how did you setup this drive, I got outstanding experience and performance from the Green drives, the only way I have had trouble with that was when I tried to use them in Raid, then I discovered the drives were not recommended for Raid and exchanged them for Enterprise drives from the WD web site.
I currently have 4x Green 2TB (data storage), 5x Green 1TB (active data), and 5x Green 500GB (boot recovery clone) drives. The oldest of them is more than one year. I have never had any failures or issues yet.
I use nothing but WD drives, my systems currently have a variety of SE16, Black, Blue, Green, and Velociraptors. The only models I have had any issues with are the inexpensive SE16’s – one SE16 500GB disappears when warmed up, another has numbers climbing up in the SMART values.
All of the Greens that I have are the Thailand product, marked for Canada. Perhaps some drives from some batch or factory have issues and I’ve just been lucky.
