Generating Previews

HI,
Just a quick question. Anyone have their system running ‘Generating Previews’?
My PR4100 is rattling along for days now.
First it went weeks indexing now it’s the previews generation.
Wish this sort of thing was under admin control rather than just doing it’s thing.
If its photos How long is 60K of them going to take.
Probably another thing I would like to see some sort of gauge showing on Home Screen. Rather than playing ‘Give us a Clue’

Disable cloud access if you don’t need that, I’ve ~15k photos and had to learn the hard way after 4 days and multiple HDD temp warnings. Since there is no gauge, I’m not sure how much of the process was actually completed.

@Princy557 For the Pro Series, the Generating Previews include thumbnails and transcoding of media content for playback when using OS5 Web and Mobile apps. Cloud Access can be disabled at the share level if remote access to the content is not needed.

There. Fixed that for you.

If one is using a form of VPN connection for remote access (like discussed in this thread), then the WD cloud access is not required.

Hi
Thanks for that. Nicely explained, appreciated. (I would think this group are not all at expert level so this is need information to us oldies) Thanks.
One thing though. How do I put in a suggestion?
I was thinking along the lines that both index and preview both had some form of guesstimate indicated on screen. %bar or even file count. It would let users at least know what is going on???
Can this be added to future versions, if it is supported by others of course.

Adding my two cents here to agree with the other posters

I like the cloud feature for my MyCloud Ex2 Ultra NAS, but the “generating previews” step has been running for 2 straight days now. It’s important, I think, that you modify the feature to give me a lot more feedback about what it is doing. Tell me what file its working on so I can see the progress it is making, also tell me (if possible) how many files it still has to go through.

And finally let me skip this step completely if I want to! I don’t really need to see images/previews of the files - I’m happy just using the filenames; I’d rather not stress my NAS out by having it running this hard for an indefinite amount of time.

If you’re feeling ambitious give me a manual “generate previews for this folder” button, with a “cancel” option so I can stop it if i want to. My poor NAS can’t handle this much work but I’m afraid to stop the process for fear of corrupting whatever it is doing.

Nice idea, but poorly executed I’m sorry to say.

My sentiments exactly!

It is sad to see that the devs doesnt take our feedback seriously. This is one of the features that should be implemented. Just stop generating previews, what kind of hard work could that be to stop the preview process ?

Either that, or I would love to see WD letting us know how much progress we have made in this step. Right now I don’t know how long it will take, because generating previews eats up my entire CPU usage and I can’t really use the NAS when this is happening.
