Found HDD Over Network but can't see Movie Files

Hey guys,

So i recently recieved my WD TV Live and my usb wireless connector.

My setup is as follows:

  • WD TV Live is connected to my TV in my bedroom
  • My 2TB WB External hard drive with all my video files is connected to my computer which is located in another room

so obviously my goal is to access the files on my external hd via the wireless feature on wd tv live.

First question: what iis the difference between Media Shares and Media Server and which is better??

when i first setup the network i was able to play my video files from my hd over the network via media shares.

However 30 mins later when i came back from having a shower it had been disconnected from the network. this was ok i just reconnected it by restarting the deivce, so i did what i did before went into media shares and found the folder where my video files were located, however i got a message saying “there is no media in the current folder” and it has come up with the same message for the past few days. this really pisses me off because i havent changed anything on my pc or anything, and it was working before…

anyways if someone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated! i hate having to unplug and replug my hdd from my pc to the wd tv unit!

You’re mashing two terms.

There are NETWORK SHARES and MEDIA SERVERS.    Not  MEDIA SHARES.

Network Shares use the Microsoft Networking feature that’s been around since like Windows for Workgroups.

The WD can find your PC, and as long as you have the appropriate folders “Shared,” the WD can access all the files inside.

The MEDIA SERVER function requires there be a DLNA software process running on the PC.   Windows 7 supports that natively, but it will only support files that Windows Media Player can play.

Read the FAQ for the WDTV Live / Live+ to compare the differences.
