Firmware started updating on low power. (1.04.06)

TL;DR: The firmware update froze for hours, went fine after charging more and restarting the device.

I received the device right around the time of the firmware update, so one of the first things I tried was running that update.
When I clicked the message, I got a warning which I misread. I thought it said that I should either power the device to at least 50 percent, OR plug it in.

So I plugged it in and started the update. This time it continued to download the update and running it. The progress bar just stayed empty for several hours. I thought it could be waiting for the battery to be at at least 50%, but even then it just did nothing. After considering the possible outcomes, I decided to risk restarting the device. When I did, and retried updating the firmware, it was completed within minutes.

So I guess the firmware update software itself also checks battery level, just in a different way than the UI. It might be worth making sure the UI doesn’t allow the update to start either.

Welcome to the Community and thank you for sharing your discovery. A security or fail/safe mechanism is often needed to improve the likeliness of a firmware update going smoothly. It’s good for the WD Community to know the WD Passport Wireless is able to self-diagnose the battery on such occasions.

On the other hand, yes, having the UI blocking access to the firmware until the battery is charged to a certain level would be preferable. Maybe you should try contacting WD’s Technical Support about this. You can do so either by phone or email.

It does support a warning to user if update FW your battery power must be more then 50%.  I double check on my passport wireless when I try to update my device again on 1.04.06.
