Hello,
I’m interested in buying the My Cloud EX4100 NAS drive. I would like to buy the Red Pro drives to run in it as they have the longer warranty, etc. However, your website shows a compatibility list that does not include them (All Products: Shop Hard Drives, SSDs, USBs, & Memory Cards | Western Digital). Why are 7200 RPM drives not supported in this product? Thank you.
Hello there,
I do no think there could be a problem with Red Pro drives on this device, but I have not tried this so I do not have this information. Regarding 7200 RPM drives I assume it could be that with 7200 RPM drives, the unit could consume more energy and probably heat up as well. However lets see if another user can share some information regarding Red Pro drives on this unit and help with this question.
Yeah, I don’t get it. I called up the support line and after 10 - 15 minutes was just told yes you’ve read the page right but we can’t answer your question because that is a design issue so contact them. Tried opening a support case but the form would not accept the model number.
The hard drive compatibility list says “7200rpm drives and 10,000rpm drives are not supported.” I didn’t see any machines on there that take the 7200 Red Pros.
Hmm, that’s weird. The English compatibility list (All Products: Shop Hard Drives, SSDs, USBs, & Memory Cards | Western Digital) sais “7200rpm drives and 10,000rpm drives are not supported”. My English isn’t perfect but it sounds to me that there is NO HDD supported which has 7200 or 10000rpm. That surprises me a lot. As I am German I looked at the German compatibility list (http://www.wdc.com/de/products/products.aspx?id=1460#Tab2&Tab9) and there is a note “Support für Laufwerke mit 7200 U/min ist auf die unten aufgeführten Modelle begrenzt. Alle anderen Laufwerke mit 7200 U/min werden nicht unterstützt”. The meaning of this is “The support for drives with 7200rpm is limited to the following models. Others than the listed drives are not supported”. As the listed drives are 5400rpm it seems the German comment is wrong.
I would suggest to buy the red-series (without pro) or other drives <7200rpm (I have Seagate ST8000AS0002 8TB) installed without problems). The money you have to add for faster drives does not pay out because the transfer rate is ~100mb/sec and is limited to the network and the processor installed in the NAS.
