Hello: My current setup. WDTV first ever model, many years old and still works like new. Older LG Flatscreen (still flawless, no need for replacement), Stereo amp and speakers. Nothing special.
The set up works perfect for many years EXCEPT MKV files with header stripping and DTS audio (I convert with Popcorn to AC3… big hassle). Sometimes after conversion, MKV files get damaged and stop playing in middle of movie… (Original plays fine, tired of all this headache)
I want a simple setup that I don’t have to go through menus to change audio outputs, NO TOSlink cables, PCM, no surround sound… JUST want to watch TV files on my WDTV… NO complications.
So…simple question. Will the newest WDTV Live play the files with DTS audio on my simple TV with my simple USBflash drive simply like my old WDTV to my TV through my HDMI cable. Tired of jumping through hoops just to watch movies over this DTS thing.
JUST want to plug in Flashdrive, turn on TV and watch… THATS IT.
Yes, the newer WDTV’s will decode DTS to 2 Channel Stereo for your TV
(WDTV Live Streaming (SMP), WDTV Media Player 2014 (Personal Edition), WDTV Live Hub)
If you get one… go to Setup > Audio/Video Output > Audio Output > Stereo
The only WDTV’s that don’t decode DTS to 2.0 Stereo are the Gen1’s and the WDTV Play (maybe even the WDTV Mini and Elements Play as well … those are pretty old)
No probs, just to let you know … there’s been reported bugs with MP4’s on that device (and the Live Streaming on Latest Firmware)
Personally, i do own that model … and have encounted a small percentage of my MP4’s won’t play (after a few minutes of remuxing them, they play fine after that)
Have’nt encountered and issues with MKV, AVI, WMV
WD are yet to release a Firmware Update to fix the MP4 issue … but, i’m hoping soon
