Drive locked when came out of the box!

I purchased a WD Elements external hard drive yesterday through Amazon UK. It was delivered today, but when I connected it to my laptop, I discovered that although it registered as an external device for the computer, the drive itself was locked - and thus I can do nothing with it as it stands! I need to get an activation code for the drive. It is a 2 TB drive. I have run a diskcheck which shows no errors with the drive itself, but without an activation code I cannot use the drive at all. How do i obtain an activation code.
