I have a new 8 TB My Book that I am trying to use on my Mac running Sierra 10.12.1.
Using Disk Utility and the Erase command, I am getting an error that it is
Unable to write to the last block of the device
so the operation fails.
I have tried some terminal solutions to no avail.
Any possible solutions?

If you are using a WD My Book single-drive, please connect the drive with a different USB cable.
Also, have you tried to connect the drive to a different computer and ran a diagnostic test on the drive through Disk Utility?
