New "my passeport" cannot connect to MAC

Hi,

I just get a new “My passeport” 2To.

I have a macbook pro running macOS High Sierra (10.13.3).

I followed the instruction on this website to erase and format the external drive using “disk utility” :

I chose the format “MAC OS Extended journaled” as indicated.
I got an error message “Erase process has failed.” with the following details:

  • Unmounting disk
  • MediaKit reports not enough space on device for requested operation.
  • Operation failed…

Now the laptop doesn’t cannot mount the WD and I can do nothing from the “disk utility” application.

If someone know what to do now… I would be very grateful.

My plan is to partition the WD: 1To tu use Time machine and 1To for backup specific data.

Thank you for your reply, unfortunately the “operation failed”, I cannot resolve the issue with this method…
