Disable remote access

Hello

When being My Cloud Home 8 TB I was sure I can access device from local network, but it seems the only way is to use https://home.mycloud.com/ - is that true?

The question is - how secure are data on this device? If anyone will hack WD home.mycloud database they will get remote access to all my files? Is it any option to disable remote access? This is really strange that my files could be accessed by anyone, in fact also by anyone from WD team so at the moment I feel like data on device weren’t in fact mine.

Also - is it possible somehow to use FTP on this drive? When I was buying I got information it supports FTP protocol but haven’t seen it anywhere so far.

Best regards

Internet connection is required for account authentication however all data is stored locally on the My Cloud Home device. WD does not have access to your data.

To access the data with out using the web interface you will need to install WD Discovery. In WD Discovery you can sign in to your My Cloud Home account and it will mount the private user space as a drive on the computer.

There is no way to disable remote access of this device.

FTP is not supported on the My Cloud Home.

Yes, I installed WD discovery but when anyone would hack to my online account they will have access to all my files because they are all visible in web interface. So they could download them, add anything to drive or remove them?

you seem very concerned about the security of this device and i agree, it needs more.
two-factor authentication would be a great feature to add into this platform.
aside from VERY* strong passphrases, temporarily disconnecting from your router, or turning the unit off, there is not a lot of passive protection it seems.
on the other hand, without local access, if someone breaks into your place and steals it, your data will be safe from physical recovery [by someone other than you].
i feel like this device has a niche, and this is in a dorm room or other shared living space with people you may not trust like family.
good luck finding the right product for your needs.

O

Thanks for answer. Yes - I’ve decided to return this product and look for NAS server because security is the most important thing for me. And in my case I’m not concerned about physical access as I use the device at my home and store additional backups also outside my home.
