Direct connection between MyBook Live and Mac

Hi all.

Do you know a reliable way to establish a direct connection between a MyBook Live and a Mac? I had it working once earlier this week, but didn’t succeed again since then.

Here are a few details about my setup:

  • MyBook Live 3TB p/n WDBACG0030HCH-00

  • DIsk connected to computer using the ethernet cable that came with the disk

  • Macbook Pro running OSX 10.6.8

  • Ethernet port is the network device with first priority, static network address (manually assigned) is 192.168.3.1.

  • WLAN (AirPort) enabled and connected to internet router

Things I’ve tried, none of which did work:

  • Set the ethernet port to DHCP, turn the disk off and on

  • Set the ethernet port to DHCP with manual address, turn the disk off and on

  • Set a static network address manually, turn off WLAN and reboot the computer

  • Reset the disk using its reset button while connected.

Any helpful suggestions are very welcome!

Kind regards

John

Thanks to the 26 who took the time to read my question so far.

Here’s what I did a few minutes ago to get it working.

In System Preferences > Network, remove the Ethernet entry

Reboot the Mac

In System Preferences > Network, the ethernet device is found again. Manually assign an IP address (mine is now 192.168.4.1).

After a few seconds, an Ethernet connection is established and MyBook shows up.

I hope there won’t be any further problems …

Did you use a specific IP address or did you create your own?

I wanted to do the same one. What I did is I just connected MBL and MacBook directly, Router and Internet via WLAN. I did nothing else. MBL popped up in finder and everything worked. I did not use a static IP. I just let the MacBook do, the IP my Mac assigned to the MBL automatically started the with 169…

Worked like a charm, full 300 GB Backup in 3-4 hours!
