Does not recognise MyBookLive on a Mac

I can not discover my WD MyBookLive from my Mac.  I have connected my MyBookLive to a power source, then pluged it into my router.  There is  solid green light on my MyBookLive and the light at the back is solid yellow.  I have used the software on the install CD and it cannot discover it.  I have gone through everything they have sugested and come up with nothing.  I have eventually found this forum and looked at everything that people have mentioned about similar problems, but cannot apply my poor knoweledge of the internals of computers to any avail.

I have tried plugging it straight into my laptop, it reads, but this is of little use to me.  I bought it specifically because it’s a network drive.  I could not find any information that was of any use to me when I had it connected via hardwire that might help me.  When ever I’m asked to type in http://mybooklive into my browser, it automatically corrects this to http://www.mybooklive.co.uk both in firefox and safari.  When I did have it hardwired I managed to sucessfully update my firmware to the most recient version.

I’m at a loss - I don’t know what a static IP address is, or how to change the kathamagabobbie from ERG!$F to WTYGNB# or any other tricky situations.  The only other information on this forum is related to Windows baced computers.  So yeh, any help would be greatly appricated.

Computer: Apple MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 - 8GB ram

OS: Mac OS X 10.6.6

Western Digital: My Book Live 2TB

Router: Netgear Wireless Cable Voice Gateway

Let’s see if we can work through this.  From your initial description it sounds like you have the device connected up correctly and the green LED on the front means the unit is ready to go.

Mac sure your laptop is also connected by ethernet cable to the router as well first.  This will help to better troubleshoot where the problem lies.

If you want to want to go to the device user interface, then you would type in

http://mybooklive/UI

Now, this is would be the default if you have not changed the device name yet.  If your device already has the device name changed, then you would type in http://yourdevicename/UI.   That should get you to the user interface to make changes to the device settings.

Easier way to get to it on a Mac is to open Safari. On the top menu bar on the left, there is the bookmark icon,  click on that.  Now click on Bonjour and it will open a window on the left.  Look for the device name e.g. MyBookLive and double click on that.  It will also bring you to the device interface as well.

If you want to access the Public share to store your data, open Finder on the bottom dock of your Mac desktop.  On the left column look in the section called Shared.  You should see MyBookLive device name there.

This is just going through the basics, but please provide info on what you would like to do first so we can narrow down instruction sets.

Thank you chetac01

When i punch in http://mybooklive/UI into my web browser it tried to redirect me to a british online bookstore http://www.mybooklive.co.uk and says “Page Not Found! - You’ve stumbled on a page that has either been removed or you’ve incorrectly typed the URL!”

When in Safari when I click on the Bonjour button, the only thing that is displayed is “Anout Bonjour” - nothing else.

MyBookLive does not appear in the Shared section of my Finder.  I can only see my a USB harddrive I have connected to my AirPort Extreem (I use my airport extreem to connect a printer and harddrive, but not to route my internet.  This is done from my wirelss netscape router, and I have plugged my WD MyBookLive into this netscape router")

WD Support got back to me and asked me "Do you know the IP Address that is assigned to My Book Live by your router? If you know the unit’s IP Address you can access My Book Live’s Dashboard (user interface) by using the IP Address (For example; http://192.168.1.100)..) " But I have no idea how to find such information, nor did he give me any indication to find out this information.  I have replie back to him, but have no heard anything yet.

What I would like to do is have my computer recognise my drive s that I may be able to put files onto it.

In order for ANY hostname to be used in the address, your DNS server must have that name registered.  If your MyBook Live is using DHCP, that should be automatic, but if not, you probably should just do

http://ip address of your mybook live/UI

Ok, can you try this out for me?

  1. Unplug the MyBookLive from the power source.

  2. Remove the ethernet plug for the MyBookLive from the Netscape router

3. Plug the ethernet cable instead into one of the ethernet ports on the back of the Airport Extreme.

  1. Once you do that, plug the power back to the MyBookLive and wait for the green led to come one

  2. Launch Finder from your laptop.  Can you see the MyBookLive then? How about from Bonjour?

@TonyPh12345 - i do ot know if my MyBookLive is using DHCP or not.  I don’t know what the ip address of my MyBookLive is, or how I find out.  This was the same response WD gave me (see above post) and I told them I don’t know how to do that (see above post)

@Cheytac01 - I have done exactly as you suggested.  It does not recognise in the finer, or Bonjour.  It is still just displaying the same information.

Ok…you have an interesting network setup at home.  It seems you have a netgear that is tied to the internet and the airport extreme that is not tied to the internet.  Not sure if you netgear is tied to your airport extreme.  Your network setup seems to be more complex and I am not familiar with how it was setup.

In order for your laptop to see the MyBookLive, they both need to be tied to the same router.

If you had someone help you setup your home network, I think they may be able to assist you further on how the MyBookLive can get setup as well.  Without knowing how you are configured, I am not sure what else to try.

I get my internet from a cable in the wall - this goes to my netgear and from there wirelessly to my MacBookPro.  My airport extream (which was my old router ages ago) was lieing around and concidering my printer isn’t wirelss, I thought I would connect up my printer to my Airport Extream and link it wirelessly into my network so I can now print wirelessly.  This aside I think my setup should be relativly nomal.  I didn’t set up my netgear, the people from the internet company did.  Alas they speak French, and my French is not good enough to order dinner, let alone explaine complex situations about products that they simply don’t care if they work or not (they are frenh after all).  If I can’t get any help here, I have just waisted €300 :frowning:

Thank you for the additional description.  I think I know what may be the general issue.  It is possible that somehow your MacBookPro is connected to one network, while the MyBookLive is residing on a different network.  That could explain why the MacBookPro is not seeing it in Finder or Bonjour.  The netgear router is generating one network, while the Airport Extreme is generating another one.

Doing my best to help, but the difficult part is, I am not sure how they configured the Netgear.  Normally, a basic home network should be setup with internet coming in through wall.  Then that is tied into cable modem/Router (in this case your Netgear) .  From there the router has both wireless access and available ethernet ports on the back to tie in other devices.  These devices can then access the internet or work with each other (e.g. your printer and your laptop).  So in essence, your Netgear should be the a main centeral hub and the only router that you would use.

Just curious if we tried this or not.  Did you try the following:

1. Plug the MyBookLive into the Netgear router by ethernet port

  1. Plug the MacBookPro into another available port on the Netgear router at the same time?  (Maybe disable the wireless function on the MacBookPro temporarily as you try this?)

(I almost want to suggest that you disable or remove the airport router completely and bring the printer to the Netgear as well.  Instead of the airport, you can attach an unmanaged switch to the Netgear to give you more ports to attach other devices.)  btw, your netgear is model CVG834G?

When plugging an ethernet cable from my MyBookPro into my Netgear and from there into my MBP I could see my MyBookPro from the shared list in Finder.  I could also see it from Bonjour.  The MyBookLife icon appears in my toolbar and after selecting the dashboard it tells me “Network link is down: The network link is down or has become intermittent.  Please check your network connection.” From the dashboard I can see my MyBookLive is set to DHCP and has a Mac Address and IP Address.

When i disconnect the eithernet connection from my MBP I can now access the MBL dashboard - but it is still telling me “Network link is down”.  It has been removed from shared and is no longer in Bonjour.  I did however go to Finder > Go > Connect to Server and punched i the name of my drive and connected.  Now it has come back on my shared folder and appears like I can drag files across into it.  But it is not in Bonjour.  When I restart my computer, it disappears.

The reason I have my printer connected to my airport is because it is USB and my Netscape doesn’t have a USB drive.  They are also too far apart from each other to connect regardless.  But my understanding is that I’ve set up my Airport to connect to the network the netscape is generating.  I unplugged my airport for this test.

The model of my netscape is different to that which you suggested.  Mine is a CBVG834G

I have a very similiar set up. Quick review, internet is going from wall into modem/router (wireless disabled), and then I have my airport extreme plugged into this modem/router in bridge mode. The Airport Extreme gets its IP from the main modem/router. I then connect all my hard wired and wireless devices to my Airport Extreme, including my MBL. If you are connecting it this way, you should have no problem.

But if you are connecting it to your main router, and your MAC is connecting to your Airport Extreme, and you are having problems seeing each other, then that would indicate an IP Address problem, meaning your Airport Extreme should be in bridge mode (main router handles the DHCP serving).

If not, and it is also enabled as a DHCP server, you will could have two different IP schemes being used and you should verify your settings in the Airport Extreme with Airport Utility.

Questions: (Now that you have it hard wired into your main router)

  • What IP is your MAC getting ?

  • What IP is your MBL getting?

If I have your set up all wrong, I apologize in advanced and disregard.

Hi everyone,

I think I have almost the same problem as CarnivalFR: Internet from a cable in the wall (Numericable, a french internet access provider), a Netgear router and two MacBook Pro I can not connect to my WD Mybook Live 2TB drive.

By the way CarnivalFR, don’t worry about their hotline, they don’t speak french either: I tried to get their help and the guy laughed at me when I told him my hard drive was plugged to my router by ethernet. He told me it did not exist and suggested I go to the shop (a fast way to dismiss the problem).

Anyway, I have managed to find my hard drive via it’s IP adress through safari but still nothing in my computer’s Finder.

Did you solve your problem? I could use your experience on this matter.

You are able to access the drive via ip correct? That means you are on the same IP scheme or network then. Have you enabled all the sharing options ?

Ok I have the same problem, I connected my MBL 2Tb on my router via Ethernet, on my iMac (osx 10.6.7) when I try to install the MBL wih the setup application, it seems not to be recognized. I downloaded a small free app called ‘IP Scanner’ (from appstore) to find the IP address of the MBL and found it this way. Then yes I can connect to my MBL going to finder > top menu > go > connect to server > smb://192.168.1.6 (192.168.1.6 is my MBL actual IP address, I guess you figure it out yours may be different). Now, how can I get the small icon with the menu on my finder top menu (right side)? Why doesn’t it works like everybody?

Hi

I have a MyBookLive (MBL) 2 TB. I have been using succesfully the drive for the last 5 months. My network is composed of 1 XP laptop, 1 Win 7 laptop and a Mac Mini OSX 10.5.8 Leopard. The router is a Linksys E3000. The MBL is assigned a static ip of 192.168.1.60.

A few days ago, I was unable to access the drive from the Mac. Actually I cannot even see it from Finder. I was able to access the web interface, but it constantly has connection problems. It looks intermitent. The strange thing is I do not have the problem from any of the Windows laptops.

I have tried restarting the drive and nothing happens. I have also made a review of the network to see if there was any other device assigned the same ip, and found no conflict.

I think for some strange reason the drive is unable to sign in into the Mac environment.

I will appreciate any advise

I have conciderd throwing mine out the window.  Will never buy WD again.  And their support never called me.  Actually that’s a lie.  They called me on the way to the airport, we scheduelled a new time for them to call, and then they never made the apointent.  Pathetic.

It will be good for you to contact  WD

I would like to reinforce what Wizer is saying.  If nobody is able to help you, you may want to contact WD’s Technical Support group.  You can do so either by email or phone.

Look at this, maybe this helps - I’ve had the same issues and could work it out!
