Differences between MyCloud and WDMy Cloud Home Personal Cloud!

I think MyCloud was and still is a terrific product. However, it is old and no support, no new OS.

What are the differences?

Is My Cloud Home on the same spec and features level as MyCloud Old.

Everyone says I should get a Synology, but why do I want to spend so much money.

I want speed, email features for large files, media for my music streaming with Twonky, and backup and file management for MAC, and Windows. MyCloud did all this nicely.

It is too bad WD will not release a new robust cheapy priced single bay MyCloud replacement.

They would sell a lot these.

If one searches the WD Knowledge Base (see link top of page) they will find a WD Knowledge Base article giving some generalities on the different between the My Cloud and My Cloud Home.

For the record I’ve never used a My Cloud Home. But as I understand it the My Cloud Home requires broadband access for setup and possibly for general operation, where as the My Cloud line does not. The My Cloud Home uses a completely different operating system than the My Cloud Line. The My Cloud Home does not use or have a “Dashboard” for advanced settings/configuration like the My Cloud line has. The My Cloud Home doesn’t have SSH access for the few times one may need it like the My Cloud line has. With the My Cloud line the EX2 Ultra appears to now be their entry level My Cloud line device.

The main advantage to going with Synology or Qnap is a more mature operating system and likely significantly more features and options. Better hardware capabilities are also likely.

The problem with “cheap” is that it typically comes at the cost or expense of; features, options and hardware. If you want “cheap” then look into building your own NAS box. From SoC devices like Raspberry Pi 4’s + external USB hard drives to using an old computer. Plenty of DIY options out there. Plenty of DIY NAS guides can be found in a basic internet search. Its generally a lot more work (including knowledge and skill) to DIY your own NAS but its often cheaper, particularly if you have extra hardware laying around that can be repurposed. If you want an integrated solution with good OS and mobile app support then one typically will spend more money for it by going with Synology, Qnap, WD or other manufacturers.

Reading the link, WD makes one think MyCloud Home is an upgrade to the Classic MyCloud.

However, this quote from Bennor says it all in my mind;

But as I understand it the My Cloud Home requires broadband access for setup and possibly for general operation, where as the My Cloud line does not.

This is a fundamental flag in my mind. The “point” of a NAS is personal storage. Why does it need internet access?

Frankly. . .without going into depth. . . I never really read that anyone considers the Home as superior. I do read a bunch of complaints regarding (lack of) functionality.

Same here. I don’t recall anyone in these subforums saying the My Cloud Home was superior or better than the My Cloud line. If one is considering a My Cloud Home they should read through the My Cloud Home subforum to see the many issues and complaints people have with that line of WD devices.
