Hi, I am using WD My Passport Ultra 2TB metalic hard drive. OS on my system is Windows 7.
Windows is recognizing the drive but unable to open or show its properties. As soon as I connected the drive to system it is asking to format. when I tried to format(which I don’t want to), formatting failed. I ran the diagnostic tests using Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows downloaded from WD website and the tests failed.I tried to mount this on a linux machine and mounting also failed. Is there any way to find the issue with the drive and recover it without loss of data?
Following is the results of the diagnostic tests:
Test Option: QUICK TEST

Unit Serial Number: [[DELETED - Privacy]]
Firmware Number: 1012

Test Option: EXTENDED TEST
Model Number: WD My Passport 0820
Unit Serial Number: [[DELETED - Privacy]]
Firmware Number: 1012

SMART Status: FAIL
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 08-Unable to repair bad sectors.

Test results would unfortunately indicate a physical issue. Data recovery through software may not be possible.
I’d recommend contacting a professional data recovery service company.
You can also request a free replacement under warranty.
Hi Pranav_G,
Same problem here. It seems this slow response is a general issue with WD external USB drive.
See this explanation for instance.

For unknown reason, with time, WD external HD controller becomes flooded with health data regarding potential bad sectors and the device goes into coma-like conditions.
This is a very WD specific behavior and, apparently, nothing to do.
