Hello,
Pretty sure this subject has already been discussed, but I’m unable to find a good answer to my question.
- As seen, WD SmartWare backup software does not delete files that I deleted from my computer, really ? It never deletes thoses files / folders ?
- Ok, if it’s the case, what happends when my hard drive is full ? Does it purge deleted files to get space again or you have to clean the hard drive yourself ?
Thanks for your answers

1- The purpose of a backup is to have the same files on 2 different places in case one is to fail, hence, by definition, a backup will not erase files as it’s meant to be used as a secondary location for files already found on another location.
2-When the drive is full, it gets stuck until you erase files. Another software other than Smartware will purge deleted files, but if you do that then you are synchronizing rather than backing up (A sync software keeps the same files, erasing what’s gone as well).

Nice to know, but it’s weird that WD SmartWare isn’t able to clean itself after few days / months. What’s the best way to clean the drive when it’s full ? Deleting the WD SmartWare.swstor from the drive ?
Yep, but that con corrupt the entire backup, making you start over. If you want to keep the same files (Erasing what’s gone) then try Memeo Sync or DMailer Sync or any -sync- software (Try the free ones first).
Anyway, unless you have more files on your computer than the size of your external drive, then you should not be worried about the drive getting full, as Smartware does not repeat each backup from scratch, it simply adds what’s new.
