When time machine asked if I wanted to use my WD Passport as the main drive I accidetally hit “yes”. It began to reformat the drive and deleted files from my passport external hard drive. Does anyone know if there is a way to recover the files from the hard drive?

On this case my best recommendation is to try to run a Data Recovery software on the drive, the good thing is that the drive is accessible at the moment, although as this will not guarantee that all the data will be saved but there is a high probability it will be saved. Hi, Yes your chances of recovery are quite high.
I suggest you dont back up anything to the passport until you have had a chance to run some scans on it using some free or trial recovery software on your computer. You don’t see the files on your passport right now but they are still there. They are just marked for deletion. They should reveal themselves with the recovery software you use. Good luck!
