Data Recovery Programme (My Book Live) - has anyone had any success?

My My Book Live was part of the 24th June hack. Everything is gone. It had everything on it.

They’re saying I can send them the device and they’ll see if they can recover anything. Either way, they’ll then destroy the device so if they’ll not been successful I don’t have a chance of finding a way myself.

And what did WD send files back on, if any were recovered?

I’m keen to know if anyone has had any luck restoring their files?
Thanks,
Steph

I paid to have recovery done by Ontrack before they announced the plan and got a good deal of data back, but sent the drive in for the free WD recovery just in case they are able to get better results. I received a tracking number this morning and should have the recovered data next week and will update. It goes to Secure Data Recovery for this offer, and looks like they send back a Passport or similar USB drive.

Was the recovered data (you got back) sorted as file types based on signatures? or
Did the data recovery include filenames and the directory structure intact?

Sorted as file types, but no filenames or structure. I’m rebuilding that now based on other data such as date taken in jpgs, artist/album/song data in music files, etc. It’s a long process…

If you have about 80,000 + JPEG files like I did it will take a considerable amount of time. I found a couple useful free tools (one of them has a paid version that affords a little bit of flexibility - for $9) that can do this sorting if the recovered JPEG files have EXIF information.

The following website has two versions (free limited sorting and a paid more features):
https://www.mjbpix.com/automatically-move-photos-to-directories-or-folders-based-on-exif-date/

This website has several software tools including an EXIF tool that is free:
AmoK Exif Sorter 3.0 (Official Website)

Thanks for the feedback! Good luck with your sorting.
