I am setting up my MyCloud but I found that any user can access the dashboard by typing the IP address in any web browser. Is there any way to restrict access to the dashboard to certain users??
Have you set a password for the admin account? Only the admin account can access the Dashboard.
I set that password in the initial setup of the NAS. However, I found that anybody who is connected to the network can setup the device using WD software and will become administrator with full access to the dashboard. I tried to restrict administrative privilege only to myself, but couldn’t find any way to modify it. Even though, any user can type the IP address of the NAS and will be immediately in the Dashboard without even putting the user name and password! This actually weird.
Make sure your changing the actual administrator account on the My Cloud via the Dashboard > Users page. The Administrator account is denoted by the green checkmark next to the User name. Change the User account First Name to something other than Admin or Administrator. Then make sure the Password option is set to On, then select the Edit link next to the Password On button and enter a password or change the exiting password. Next log out of the My Cloud and close ALL other open web browser windows. Then open the web browser and try to access the My Cloud Dashboard and see if it prompts the user to enter the administrator user name/password.
Dear Bennor,
I did exactly what you explained and now I can access the control panel (as administrator) by only entering my user name and password. But, what about other users, should I set their password option to on or off. And, if it is set to on, will they still be able to access their folder on the NAS?
My aim is to only prevent anybody from accessing the control panel. Should I remove all the users from control panel and only allow them to access a shared folder through the network? Will they be able to access this folders remotely via web without having their user account at the NAS?
I am sorry for bothering you by my “basic” questions, but I am not a geek. That’s why I am here!
Only the administrator account can access the Dashboard control panel. The other user accounts cannot. If you don’t set passwords for the users, they will be able to modify each other’s files. I suspect you do not want this, so it is probably a good idea to enable passwords for all accounts.
Have you downloaded and read the User Manual? It explains about user accounts.
Dear cpt_paranoia,
Thank you very much for the advice. I will read the manual in details. But only I have one last question, how can I grant administrator privilege to some other users? I mean, could there be more than one administrator?
Thanks again.
You cannot have more than one administrator account. The only way you can allow multiple users to perform admin tasks is to share the admin password.
Read the manual…
