I spent several months (on and off) trying to find a solution for this.
When I entered \MyBookLive\Public, I’d get a dialog box that wanted authentication (username and password). I tried my WIndows login, the MyBookLive username and password, the Windows user and password from another PC. Nothing worked. I saw many people with a similar problem, but no answers.
Meanwhile, my older Win7 PC still accessed the share. I became convinced that this was a Win 8 problem. My wife’s new laptop (Win 8) didn’t work at first, but then I added a shortcut and it began to work. I now suspect that this was a red herring; probably we were doing it wrong prior to the shortcut.
Anyway, last night after trying changing the username, change the device name, start the upnp service and one long series of instructions that included changing the file and printer options to off in all profiles, deleting the network adapter, reinstalling, and then changing the permissions back - and it still didn’t work, I did a system restore because I felt I was getting too far from base. Then I saw a couple of posts that said check you have the Client for Microsoft Network protocol added to the network adapter. Well, of course I had that. I thought. I didn’t. Added it and the **bleep** thing started working.
In Windoiws 8.1
Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections
R-click on Ethernet adapter > Properties
Networking tab:
Install > add Client for Microsoft Networks
Restart (may not be necessary)
Hope this helps someone else. Because I tried so many other things first, which may not have been reversed by the system restore, I can’t guarantee that this is the compete solution.
No idea how this protocal got disconnected / deleted on my PC.
